Talk the hind legs off a donkey

This phrase seems to have twisted in meaning since it originated. Most etymologists agree that it when first used, it meant that a speaker was very persuasive. Donkeys don’t usually sit down, so it took a real talent to persuade them to do so. It may be that these persuasive talkers were also very verbose, and so it has evolved into its current meaning of talking endlessly. Other things off which one can talk the legs include chairs, dogs, stoves, and elephants.
