That fucken article

by Karen Jeynes

This piece first appeared in the 2013 Sax Appeal magazine.

“People say it’s limited vocabulary that makes you swear well I don’t think so. Cause my vocabulary I know at least ohh one hundred and twenty seven words. And I still prefer fuck.” So says the great Billy Connolly, and he’s not alone. As editor of ThatWordSite we recently asked people for their favourite words, and “fuck” was the clear winner.

The average person knows roughly 12000 words, and it is estimated that 0.5% of words are swear words. This would give an average vocabulary of sixty swear words, which sounds more than adequate. But why do we need swear words, and why do we get so much pleasure from them?

pah

Although long an expression of general disagreement – “Pah! I don’t care what you think!” – “pah” now seems to have found new life as slang for giving someone the finger, usually in a metaphorical sense. The sound occurs in various South Asian slang phrases, and seems to have been lifted out to stand on its own. Unusual to find a fairly innocuous exclamation getting a less savoury meaning.

Golly

Yesterday we were asked if “golly” as an exclamation was racist. The answer is no – this has nothing whatsoever to do with golliwogs. “Golly” is one of those old-fashioned ways of saying God without actually saying God. It was first recorded in the late 18th Century as a mild euphemistic swearword for those who didn’t dare blaspheme. Variations include “golly gee”, “golly gosh”, “golly bum” and “golly gumdrops” – our personal favourite.

As a postscript, we’ve been told that “golly” is Australian slang for spitting, particularly spitting up phlegm.
